Mmmmmm.

Ok restart computer and when post screen apears you will prompted to press some thing like this F1/F2 or Del to enter BIOS/Setup.
Set first boot device in Bios/setup to CD/DVD put in operating reinstall disk press F10 to save and exit.

You will be prompted to press any key to boot from CD/DVD then do so.Do not press this again if you are prompted.Only boot from CD/DVD once.

Do not press R at first prompt just allow the disk to run then press F8 to agree to licence agreement you will be prompted to press R after this, this is called a repair install.

Or if that doesnt work then same as above first boot device set to CD/DVD rom put in disk etc. Then press any key to boot from CD/DVD then press R at first prompt this is called a recovery.

OK, you will not believe this.

I tried to boot from the CD-ROM (not sure it was the correct one, though), and it after loading for a while, it dislayed three options: reinstall windows, repair windows and quit. As I just wanted to take windows bak to an earlier version, I chose quit. Windows was restarted, and this is what happens:

The problem is gone! I have no idea why, but now it works. Thanks a lot for all help and fast replies! Will recommend this forum to others

Uff.

Sorry to bother you again with this, but it looks like it's not all solved yet...

When Windows started, it ran a lot slower than usual - just browsing a web page with Opera seemed like a huge job, and Windows did at regular intervals report that Opera "does not respond". I went away for a while to get some food and hope for it to get better, but when i returned the computer had turned itself off. When i turned it back on, the same problem had returned.

I noticed one interesting thing, however, that i had not before about the login picture
(from first post)

It is not the usual one, but a previous i had used for a long while ago (about half a year). When it suddenly worked (previous post), i simply noticed the change; two users instead of three.

I think the CD-ROM I used was a different one from the one you were talking about. It is a "Product Recovery CD-ROM" for XP SP1. Looked through quite a lot of other CDs, and also found one containing "Drivers and utlities", but I guess that won't help...

Also, the recovery CD-ROM offers reinstallation of windows, but i guess that will cause me to loose quite an amount of data?

Ok the instilantion disk?

Could you restart the machine and repeatedly tap F8 and choose safe mode?See if you can actualy login in safe mode?
If you can there maybe so much damage that a reformat may have to be performed so have you any way of backing up all your files?

Set first boot to CD/DVD in BIOS/Setup put in the instillation disk.Press F10 to save and exit etc.

Do not press R at first prompt just allow the disk to run then press F8 to agree to licence agreement you will be prompted to press R after this, this is called a repair install.Let it run untill it has done its job.

Or if that doesnt work then same as above first boot device set to CD/DVD rom put in disk etc. Then press any key to boot from CD/DVD then press R at first prompt this is called a recovery.

The software you used seems to of seriously caused damage this maybe a reformat job.

But this may work, but your files maybe corrupted way to much.
Fit the hard drive as a slave to another computer so hopefully you can access the files and remove them.
Fit hard drive back in corrupted pc and then reformat
