As a WOMAN I have built my own computer.Repaired/upgraded/formatted/rebuilt a lot of computers.
So women do not see things in 2 dimensional and men see it in 3.
Womens and mens brains have developed over the generations were as women were stay at home mom,s we now find women as the bread winners and men become stay at home farthers and do a great job at raising there childer and running a house hold.
Women have the capabilities to learn many things but if they choose not to then they leave there brains not functioning at there full capabilities this can aslo be said for men.
We are ALL great and able to learn new skills.
There are other female techs out there.
So glad I am not blonde, lol.

when you boot the machine try pressing F11 to see if it gets you into the machines recovery program I know PB machines are meant to do it so its worth a go
HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Troubleshooting System Recovery Problems in Windows Vista yes it appears im correct you should be able to recover your pc using these instructions

Re: Old blonde, puter illiterate, needs HELP desperately !!!
I have nothing against women using computers, or building them-- or whatever.... a woman can do anything a man can do... yes our thought-processes work a little differently... but then life would be awful boring if we were all the same, yes ??
Jelly Bean + Geekgirl are both fine techs. It takes time and use to learn the tricks of these machines.
You can do this-- do I 100% guarantee that your harddrive is not dying, too ?
NO
It is unlikely-- from the symptoms you describe-- some of your critical system files have become corrupted-- this will happen form time-to-time. It is a normal part of owning a PC.... this is why I say NOONE should be without a harddisc copy of their operating system. It is a necessity of owning a computer.
Without that disc--the average user could not fix such a problem. You would have to be a skilled computer-programmer to repair those files without some kind of recovery mechanism. I prefer a disc-- because...even a recovery partition can become corrupted--and then you are really stuck.
With a disc copy-- as long as you store it in reasonable conditions --you can never lose those files. Disc coatings do break down-- but by the time that happens your PC's an antique anyway.

Re: Old blonde, puter illiterate, needs HELP desperately !!!
I'm glad you're not blonde either... but not for the reason you might think. It is ...you could be missing out on something by not being a blonde, and that is the ability to laugh at yourself, when you make a silly mistake, for the blonde hair tends to make one humble particulary since guys tend to "gentle-man" up soon as a blonde enters the room. PLUS. blondes get more passes after making a mistake, i.e.blown off traffic sitations for speeding. LOL that is generaly accompanied with a slight verbal denoucing terribly SORRY, if my statements, offended you, FORGIVE me, as it wasn't my intention, especially since I was only stating some facts. Some URL's below that will support my presention scientifically. , IF.. you wish to read them...
Again, I'M VERY SORRY...

KUDO's on your ability to build your own computer, a rare talent to be sure, and a talent that I wouldn't even attempt Mainly because I wouldn't even know where to start...TRUTHFULLY!!. I have enough trouble with lawn mower, my truck maintenance, and fixing my computer...giggle giggle..which isn't fixed yet by the way...
Again I apologize for my comments cause I never dreamed it would upset someone or someones because I was only stated scientific facts;
Have a super week-end, remember Friday's can be killers
