Default Main (and only) partition is drive H:

I recently low leveled my HDD and reinstalled windows XP on it. My Master hard drive (the only partition/harddrive in the system) is labeled drive H: and the instructions here at Microsoft.com did not work for me. I am not allowed to change the letter assigned to that partition. Whenever I put a flash card or external hard drive in one of my USB ports it is assigned to the C: drive. Does anyone know of any other way to fix this problem without having to reformat again?

To change the system drive letter see the following link.

How to restore the system/boot drive letter in Windows

Post back if this doesn't work.

Even if you have an external hard drive that is always C: ?

It started as a problem with Spybot search and destroy but I fixed it by plugging in a flash card for the 1st scan and now it just knows to scan drive H: I guess. Then another time I downloaded drivers for my onboard audio and it had to auto extract it to the C: drive so I had to have a flash card in there again. I havnt sesn any other problems tho.

as long as it does not mess up your boot whats it matter ? just make sure no programs try to install to it and custom install the very few that will default to C: over your system drive
