Default Line In Sound Through USB Headphones

Hi there,

Hopefully some clever person can help me with this. I'm trying to get sound from my line in jack to come through my USB headphones but can't figure out how to do it, if it can be done at all.

Basically I have my guitar plugged into my PC through the Line In. I have backing tracks on iTunes. So I want to be able to hear iTunes and my guitar through the USB headphones. I can use ordinary headphones obviously and hear both but the sound is far better from the USB ones and I can have the volume higher.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello HitOrMiss, welcome to PCHF.

As long as those headphones are PC compatible (some are only designed to be used with the ps3 for example), all you need to do is select your headset as your sound device. To do this (assuming your running XP):

- Go to My Computer or Start, followed by Control Panel.
- Double click on Sound and Audio Devices.
- Click on the Audio tab, and under "Sound Playback", select your headset as your default device.

Doesn't work unfortunately. Just puts everything else through the headphones, but not the Line In.

So you can hear the microphone if you connect a headset to the line-out jack on the back of the soundcard, but not if you connect a USB headset? Are you absolutely sure? What is the purpose of this particular setup?

Is there any chance you could fill in your PC spec's by going to Quick Links, followed by Edit Options. If there is any information your unsure of, this utility will help you find any information you need: http://www.gtopala.net/download.php?file=1 . This may help us out with this particular problem, as well as any future problems you may have.

I'm just connecting the headset to a standard USB port. The reason I'm trying to get this sorted is so that I can hear my guitar through my headphones (at the moment I have to use ordinary headphones out of the speakers). Some tracks that I play along with have a low volume even with everything up at max. So when I play along I have to lower the guitar too. Takes a bit of the fun away. But when I use the USB headphones for some reason the volume is much higher.

I'm not sure how to go about doing what you said with changing specs but I'll definitely check out that link. Thanks.

Hey Hit, where in your options it says for example, "Sound Card", if you don't what soundcard you have in your system, you can use SIW, most information will be found under the category of Hardware followed by Devices, Sound and Audio Devices. Your sound card is quite often the very first item on the list. Unfortunately, the most basic and poorest quality sound chipsets are also the most popular, because most will simply use them for their very basic functions. Examples include AC97, Soundmax and Crystal. They all have their little annoyances when you want to do more with them than simply audio, you may have found another. If I can get the name of your audio device, I can give you a download link for their latest driver, and see if they have overcome this problem in software, just incase it's a driver problem as apposed to a hardware issue.
