Default Memory write/read failure at 18005E14

Hello,
I hope you can help me. I have a Dell Latitude C640 Laptop running Windows XP w/SP2. The issue I have, first started out with a Blue Screen of Death that flashed then the PC rebooted but stalled while loading Windows. Tried to start in Safe Mode to run Spybot to see if it was a virus Safe Mode would freeze up as well. Now each time I start PC it gets a flash of BSoD and then attempts to reboot. I have gotten the following message on the screen a number of times:

"Memory write/read failure at 18005E14, read 00EF00E5 expecting 00EF00EF.
The amount of system memory has changed.
Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run Setup Utility."

I am at a complete lose on how to troubleshoot this since I can not even get the system to load!

Thanks

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Could you power off the computer and check your RAM is seated correctly.

Or your RAM is going bad as in failing.

click F2 and load failsafes/defaults and reboot. If you manage to get into windows goto control panel system advanced start up and recovery and untick automatically restart. Then if you get the BSOD you will get to see what caused the error or at the least an error code to tell us TIA for the extra information

I was able to get into the F2 system Bios. System memory showed 384 megs, I reseated the memory and it now shows 1.256gig. Rebooting still occurs. No message about decreased available memory.

Have not been able to get into windows control panel to reset options of autorestart.

Going to try and keep rebooting and attempt to piece together the BSoD.

did you give the area around the memory slots a good blow to clean any dust out?
