Default [Pending] helpsvc.exe

Good Evening,

I recently reformatted my hard drive and all went well. But for couple of days now helpsvc.exe has been using 90% or more of my cpu usage. I read at microsoft.com that they have a hotfix for it but it comes with a warning of having not been tested with other hotfixes or updates. I put in a request for one but I was hoping someone here might have some information about it. (doesn't work, creates crashes, etc.)

Thanks for any insight.

Hello Tyenot,

This doesn't exactly answer your question cause I don't have direct experience with that problem/hotfix, but I have tried several hotfixes from the Microsoft Support site that have that similar message. I haven't come up with problems occuring as a result of following their instructions carefully. At worst, I would just see it didn't help or resolve my issue. I have never seen one hotfix fix the problem I'm working on, and then cause other problems.

That isn't to say it is impossible of course...

In my opinion, your worst case scenario is starting over again. I doubt that is much of an issue since you are working on a fresh install anyways. I'm assuming you don't have weeks/months worth of setup you'd have to redo at this point. So I would suggest just following the instructions carefully and see what happens.

If you see no difference once you're done, one thing to consider is the possibility of malicious software. The symptoms you are experiencing are similar to symptoms that result from viruses/spyware. So another thing you could consider trying is following my pre-work link and have our Security staff look at it. That is of course if you are apprehensive of just formatting and going through another fresh install. You may just save time by trying another reinstall.

Hope that helps!
