Default Memory Problem??? Jerky behaviour now and then

Hi,
My PC (fitted with XP pro) is in no way recent, but with a few hundred Gb free on my HDs and 1,1Gb of Ram, a 1,1Ghz CPU (Athlon), it shouldn't behave like this one does.
I've been in contact with a French Forum which just goes round and round, telling me to clear the registers, to clean Toolbars etc. That has led nowhere.
Hijackthis has been used many a time and doesn't reveal any spyware.
When the problem occurs (that is generally when the DD led lights or when the performance is above 40%), the symptoms are as follows:
  1. Cursur blocks on mouse movement at a rythm of about 1 sec.(then making jerky movements)
  2. File copying blocks at the same rythm (jerky movements)
  3. Sound (when listening to web radio) becomes echoed or sampled on a synthesiser, at the same 1 sec rythm.
These three aspects seem to be a memory problem. But unlike a "normal" memory problem, it occurs in jerks???
Can anyone help me solve this problem?
It's been going on like this for many months. I still can use the PC, but now and then I go crazy with it.

Many thanks to anyone who could help me,

Michel

could be paging a lot. Press ctrl alt del and click performace have this running and use computer normally. When jerky behaviour occurs take note of page file useage and cpu usage then click on processes and see if there is something hogging cycles. Post back this information also might be worth running msconfig and stopping anything not needed from starting up with the pc. Might be worth updating all your system drivers also

Thanks Zinglebarb, that was a very fast answer!
Msconfig is practicaly at minimum and I have been checking Taskmonitor for these last months. Nothing stands out as obviously wrong (to my eyes at least)
Page file usage shows nevermore than 279Mb occupation. Is that normal, considering I have over 1Gb ram ? The time line stays very low and nearly never changes. It does slightly in figures, changing from 246Mb to 279Mb but never much more.
CPU activity goes from 5% when idling, right to 100% saturation if some demanding program requires activity.
I have done most drivers upgrading as you suggest, but I haven't done it neither with XP (I haven't ever had the original cds, this computer was given to me), nor with the CPU drivers (which I discovered I could download from the manufacturer).
Would you advise me to go along thoses paths?
Thanks for any help,
Michel

It could be that the old Athlon is struggling with some of the tasks. Have you monitored temperatures? download and run orthos Download Stress Prime 2004 BETA this will run the cpu and ram hard. Also download and run everest |MG| EVEREST Free Edition 2.20 click computer and sensor and monitor cpu temps while running orthos.

Ok! Did what you suggested.
I already had Everest but Orthos is new to me.
It does put CPU in some state!!! Paging was red most of the time. Here are the results:

Type: Blend - stress CPU and RAM Min: 8 Max: 4096 InPlace: No Mem: 895 Time: 15
CPU: 1101MHz FSB: 100MHz [100MHz x 11.0 est.]

Beginning a continuous self-test to check your computer.
Press Stop to end this test.
Test 1, 4000 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M19922945 using 1024K FFT length.
Torture Test ran 0 minutes 42 seconds - 0 errors, 0 warnings.
Execution halted.

Must I run it any longer?
Seemed to be less paging when I tried Orhtos WITH Everest program running. Does that make sense?
By the way, I have no temperature values in CPU seen by Everest. Where do I find that? (I have cleaned the fan and cooler recently.)
Thanks for your help,
Michel

the problem is the age of your motherboard Everest reads the diode on your motherboard obviously with this one it can not read it. Perhaps run orthos for an hour and check in bios straight away. When your suffering the stalls what load is your cpu under and what apps are you running that do it

you could run my patented OYB test. Run orthos for a good period of tiem with the side of your case off. After a while carefully touch the heatsink. If it makes you shout Ouch You B...... chances are its running to hot
