Default Missing/Corrupt dll message in XP

Hi all,

I've an Advent desktop pre-installed with XP which I cannot access. The following error message is displayed mid way through booting up.

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll

please reinstall a copy of the above file.

I don't have any reinstall discs and I cant afford to lose the data on the hard drive so I don't to wipe it. I've a copy of XP pro can I use this to locate the missing DLL? If so how?

Thanks

During boot press F11 iirc this will bring up advents recovery. Have a look at the options for some kind of non destructive repair. If you can not find any suitable options use the xp cd and boot from it. When given the OS recovery option enter recovery console.Select your OS , At the A: type fixboot and press enter. If this is no good do the same again but at the a: type fixmbr and hit enter see if that helps

Hello, newdeafman!

You need to run a repair on the OS. go ahead and try this.

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the
boot order in the system BIOS. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R. To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you do not want to load Recovery Console). I repeat, do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R".

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and
press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, read Warning #2 below!!

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.
Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Hi again and thanks for the speedy replies. I tried F11 but there was no advent option that wouldn't involve reformatting and I've a lot of CAD drawings and other files I cant be without.

I managed to get to the licence agreement hit F8 to accept and then I got the following message

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer

"***The stop error is STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005,0xf77f0E54,0xf73CE788,0x00000000)
***setupdd.sys - address F77F0E54 base at F77C8000, Datestamp 41107c8f"

to add to that the hard drive is spinning a heck of a lot! Dont think it made that noise before I tried this re-install
