What are the hardware requirements to upgrade from Windows 2000 to XP Professional? What software will I need? And best place to purchase? Will I need my original W2K CD during the install?

Hello,if you post your computer specs we can give you a better idea.

Well at least 256 mb RAM.But to run PC well, I would say at least 512 mb RAM.

Buy the complete XP Pro install disk it will come with its own key.I am not sure of price in $ but UK it is £60.

You will need to download drivers for your make and model of computer.I would do this before you install XP Pro.Download and put them to floppy or disk.Saves time later.

A working CD/DVD rom drive.

In all actuality the minimum specs for XP Pro are:
Intel Pentium class processor 233mhz or equal comparable
64mb RAM
2gb free HD space
I run XP Home on 366mhz/192mb RAM on my laptop, it runs a little sluggish but otherwise fine (though I would never ever try to do any gaming/cad/photoshopping on it)

Hello Artlayton,

You can use XP's upgrade advisor to check your hardware and software compatibility here: Windows XP Upgrade Advisor

However, the minimum requirements is generally a minimum of a 233mhz processor, 64mb of RAM and 1.8gb of HDD space.

As for your CD, it really depends on what version of XP you buy. If you buy the upgrade version, every time you want to install/re-install XP on your machine, you will need to install 2000 first, which can be quite annoying and time consuming. There's no real "best place" to purchase XP from. Windows XP is Windows XP so look for the cheapest you can get. Buy Cheap Discount Software Sale Windows XP Home with SP2 OEM DSP N09-00984-oem

EDIT: lol, JB and Zanc are always too quick for me!

Actually you don't need to reinstall 2000 to reinstall XP off an upgrade disc
in the install wizard it will say "Cannot detect any previous Windows installations, please insert a Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, 2000 or ME cd to continue" or something like that. You just pop the cd in, the XP install wizard reads it, you eject it and pop back in the XP cd. I've done it before

I think you may well be correct.
