Smile [Resolved] Can't run repair installation

Okay what I did was rename my work group to 'WORKGROUP', then rebooted my PC. It then said I was missing something from the system32 folder. I booted it from the XP disc, pressed ENTER, then F8 to agree. Then I pressed R to run a repair installation. It then said 'Setup cannot access the CD containing the WindowsXP installation files'.

Maybe there's a way I can format my HDD and do a complete reinstallation of WindowsXP but I'm not sure how to do that when I can't get Windows to load.

I'm using WindowsXP SP2.

I need help, badly!

Thank you.

Hi v3x. There's a couple of things you can try - the disk is obviously working or you wouldn't have made it that far.

Make sure the disk is clean and try again. If you still get the same error - boot to windows CD but Press R for "to repair a windows installation using Recovery Console"

Select Installation (usually 1) then type your administrator password. at the prompt type: CHKDSK /f /r

This may take a while. Let me know if CHKDSK doesn't work. Also what was the original error you were getting. We may be able to fix that which would save you having to do the repair installation.

It says that they're invalid parameters, so I used /p /r and now it's running the CHKDSK thing. Hopefully I did that right... Did I?

I'll let you know if this helps.

Thank you.

After it completes try to get it to run again with just CHKDSK /f

The /f tells it to fix any problems it finds. Also can you tell me the original error - it may easier to fix that then to have to repair.<br>

Alright. It worked but now my PC is acting weird... I cannot connect through the LAN and my display settings are very limited. I didn't run CHKDSK /f a second time. Should I restore my PC to an earlier date that it worked or what should I do?

Also, I don't remember the exact error. Sorry :|

Try system restore it won't hurt - if that doesn't work then try running the repair install again.

Didn't work. I'll try repairing it again..

It seems as though every time I rename my PC's workgroup name it deletes files. Maybe I should just rename the workgroup name on this PC to the one on mine instead? This is the main PC, by the way.
