Talking xp on Dell laptop needs new installation
Hi I am trying to repair a Dell with xp on it. Owner has no disks but have been able to get xp serial number off computer. Computer wont accept this serial number. When I try to restart computer with xp disk in it freezes up!!
Any ideas on how to overcome this. I just wanted to do a repair not a fdisk.
I read on this site about buying an xp boot disk to fix this problem. Is this the way to go?

Have you checked that you are not mixing XP Home and XP Pro?

Wich disk are you using?
An OEM disk supplied with another PC/Laptop wich should take any key?
Or are you using a disk that was supplied with its own key?
Agree with Hengis are you using the wrong operating disk?
Turn caps off then try retyping the keycode in.You do not need to put caps lock on as the programm registers lower case as caps.
