Hey Jellybean! Shoulda known u were going to come to my rescue. But, I did a fresh install and as it was installing it was going abnormaly slow. So finally it finished but it still slow. It's got all the drivers it needs so I know thats not the cause of it. Normally, with a fresh install, your computer is going to be close to its fastest so I know something is wrong but I just can't put a finger on it.

Your right,it should be going nice and smooth and faster after a reformat.

Some times a format does take some time but not hours I usaly format any were inbetween 20 mins to and hour.

Is this a genuine OS disk? Not a copy?

Did you install on the partition that was already there or did you create another partition to install XP on?

How old is the disk?

It could of been your CD/DVD drive had trouble reading the disk, disk maybe a little dirty so was hard to read or a combination of the two?

Does the disk contain service pack 2?

If it does not you need to download and install SP2.

Open my computer properties is your full RAM showing there?

This could just be a bad install of XP?

That disk is like about three yrs old and its a genuine copy, I don't mess with copied os disks. But I installed it on a created partition in which I deleted the old one and installed a new copy on. It has sp2 on there as well. The hdd I installed it on is a used 20 gig hdd. The cd drive works fine. How I know that is that had to swap out hdd cuz the old one faulty. The old one I installed windows with no problem and after I did everything to it it blue screened. so that's why installed a "new" hdd. But this unusual to me.

It is unusal for a fresh install to be slow.

Have you installed your chipset drivers?

Downloading drivers does not mean they automaticaly install, you should update ALL drivers Via device manager.

Could you test your RAM/Memory Via this link please.Memory upgrades from Crucial.com - About Crucial:Media Toolbox

Could you check what speed your prosessor is running at in task manager?

20 gig hard drive?em how old is this hard drive?

Click start then on run type in box CHKDSK click ok.

you sure you installed your graphics drivers? Often that is what will happen when you dont install your graphics drivers, is that it will run extremely slow like that. I have the same problem with my gateway after a fresh install, when i was running the integrated graphics.

I will try that Jelly Bean and let you know what came up. AW...this computer is a Gateway. It's an "Essential" by Gateway. I'll update this thread later on tonight.

The page wouldn't come up when I click on the memory tester. Where in the task manager does it say where I can I find the processing speed or what my processor is running at?

Do u think since the hdd is 20 gigs and older that rpm may be too slow for what I'm trying to do or it still shouldn't matter? I don't think it matters to be honest. I tried re-reloading the os and this time I deleted the partition what the os was initially loaded on and did a regular format, not the quick one, in nfts file format. when I did that, it was extremely slow still. at this point, I have no idea what it could be. I really need to rectify this issue because it's really getting to me.
