This may be a liittle daft but did you check the volume .....

Right Click on the volume icon in the system tray then open volume control then options then properties this may just be that you have internet explorer sounds on mute as this happens in vista aswell where u have the oiptions to control spcific program sounds

Sean-Gillies, thank you. I did check it again, but i knew about the possibility of sound being on mute and checked that before i posted. no such luck. sound is set to mid levels, nothing on mute and music from say itunes plays fine, cd in the dvd drive also plays. youtube will not, but mp3 from internet plays fine. midi files will not play. no sound on start up or shut down of computer, but i can hear a beep when computer starts.

Hi Ellen,

I think I'm missing a peice of the puzzle here

Many youtube movies use the mp3 compression format within their movies and you can play mp3's, so it would leave it with a codec problem, so the above should have fixed it, so I think it's best if we go over everything just in case we've missed something. Just to go over the volume one more time to be sure, and hopefully sort the midi problem along the way.

- First of all, if you haven't already, open up one of your sound or video files in Media Player and make sure that the volume bar at the bottom right hand corner is up.

- Go to My Computer, Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices.
- Click on the Advanced button, and go to Options followed by Properties, and make sure all device controls are ticked. Press OK and then make sure that all volume bars are up.
- Back to "Sound and Audio Devices", click on the Audio tab, at the bottom you will see "MIDI music playback", make sure a device is selected from the dropdown box.

- Back to "Control Panel", click on System, Hardware tab, Device Manager. Under "Sound Game and Video Controllers", can you list what drivers you have here, and can you see any drivers with exclaimation or question marks against them?

Audio Codecs
Bluetooth AV Audio
Bluetooth SCO Audio
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Realtek High Definition Audio
Sound Tap Recorder
Video Codecs
No exclamation or question marks anywhere. I must say that I have already checked this before posting.
No changes to the problem. Sorry to be such a trouble maker and thank you for your help.
Ellen

While i was going through checking everything one more time after i posted, my DH came to the computer and told me that he tried something else. this computer has Realtek High Definition Audio and Asus something or other. the controls (they say Asus on top) allow to select different types of environment, like living room, room, hall, cave etc. ours was always set to living room. he set it to room and then went on youtube and played a video there. the sound works! Turns out that of about 2 dozen settings, about 1/3 do not produce sound with midi files or places like youtube, but the rest do. Of course we left it at room and now can hear everything, but i still don't understand it. I know for sure that i have tried all the environments in those controls and up until recently they all worked. this problem is recent. I don't know if i really want to waste any more anyones time on looking why it is like that. clearly something changed, one of those mysterious gremlins that live inside computers must have been up to mischief again. Thank you all for helping. Unless you think otherwise, lets close this and call it "corrected". Thanks again.
