Unhappy Bad Clusters...what does it mean?

Hi,

I have a problem with my Laptop where IE (and Firefox too) just stop being able to find anything...I have another post open about this so won't go on.
Anyhow...this error is causing us to restart the Laptop 3 or 4 times a day...recently (last couple of days) it has started to do a disk check on start-up with a light blue screen and darker blue border top and bottom...
During this check it usually finds 3 or 4 "Bad Clusters" and sets about repairing them...some repairs work and some don't seem so sucessful.

Can any one shed some light on why we're getting these and if there's a mjaor problem brewing?

Many thanks

WIO

It sounds like your hard drive is dying, you may want to replace it, or at least start saving important files/information onto CD/DVDs or to other computers before it completely fails and stops working

If your HD is SMART capable you can see how good it is by downloading Speedfan (or a variety of others, but I recommend Speedfan) and after installing it, click on the SMART tab and select your HD from the drop down list, then click "Perform an in-depth online analysis of this hard disk". It will tell you near the bottom of the resulting page what the fitness & performance levels for your drive are

Speedfan >>> SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Oh heck..that doesn't sound good.

How do I find out if it's a smart drive?

The Device Manager Properties say it's a WDC WD1200UE-22KVTO but there's no mention of it being SMART! The Acer Direct web site doesn't mention SMART either.

This Laptop is only 15 months old...is this a common problem in such a new PC?
Has been messing up since 12 months and 1 day after bought it...am begining to think that it's got a self destruct timer built in for post warrantee problem causing!

Thanks,

WIO

Just download speedfan and do as I posted, if your drive isn't SMART capable it won't appear in the dropdown menu, then you may uninstall speedfan (though you may find it's quite a useful program)

What sort of mess ups?

Although, if it's finding bad sectors every time it scans, that's a clear indication your hard drive is going bad. I recommend backing every bit of data you value and start checking out a replacement drive. You can try contacting the manufacturer to see if they'll replace it for you, otherwise you can find a hard drive for fairly cheap online

Almost all modern harddrives are Smart---
Speedfan will automatically detect it.
I would find a way to backup all your personal data-- soon.
Drives start going-- it can be rapid deteriorization.
Then it's impossible to access your files-- without expensive data-recovery services

Backup first... then ask questions.
