Default Up Grading Performance 1300 pc

I was just wondering if I should upgrade this Gateway Performance 1300 PC. I got it from a freind as a gift . They purchased a new one and gave me there old one . Now being that it is 8 years old I was wondering if I shoud spend the money to upgrade it.
Intel 1300MHz (1.3GHz) Pentium 4 Processor and Motherboard
AMD Athlon (tm)Processor
384 MB of Ram RDRAM PC800 Memory
I have changed the hard drive from 40GB to a 200GB
I had to remove all of her file and used a wipe drive and the pc said I had no harddrive when i remove thing sometimes I do to go of a job.
Right now I can not use the USB ports . The little white platic fell out. The mouse no longer works .
So what do you think should I try to upgrade it or not

I would check the motherboard and see what the max capability is and just max it out, you could pick up parts for an old PC like that dirt cheap.

Hello I would not install Vista it is not capable to run it.

I would add more RAM say 512 stick.

This is not a great computer however if you are using as general surfing and downloading it is fine.

I would install XP Home as its cheaper than Pro.

You will need to download drivers for the system,ie,chipset,BIOS update and a few others.

If the USB are faulty you can buy PCI cards they just push in a slot inside PC.

If there is not an eithernet port you can install one for just a few dollars.

If you want to connect wirlessly then just go for USB adaptor they again are cheap enough to buy.
