Smile [Resolved] Xp crashes when browsing particular drive/folder

A few months ago I installed a drive in my PC that I've been using as an external storage for my collection of videos. Recently, every time I browse folders on that drive windows crashes then restarts itself. I thought there was something wrong with Xp itself so I did a reformat thinking that the problem would be solved. Then, a few minutes ago, the same issue arose. I looked through the log in the event viewer and saw this error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error

Can anyone tell me what the problem is and anyway that I can fix it? I'm thinking it's the drive but keeping my fixed crossed in the hopes that it's an issue with windows.

Hi

Search your PC for *.dmp files...then attach the latest one to your reply here. We can then analyze the crash dump and hopefully give you a solution.

I hope that this isn't considered a double post, I just wanted to update the staff on some recent occurrences. The problem continues to worsen as an external hard drive as well as another internal drive show signs of the same problem. I'm thinking of stopping the usage of this computer altogether until this problem is fix.

HI PC love & hate, sorry for not responding sooner.
There are 3 probable causes to this.

1 - the drive is faulty (you can test this by plugging in the drive to another computer).
2 - the caddy is faulty (if it happens on the other computer, swap the hard drive with another one...if it happens again, then it's the caddy).
3 - there's an issue with the USB/Drive drivers on your computer. However, as you've reinstalled XP recently, i highly doubt this.

Wouldn't that mean that all three drives are faulty? Since it happened on the two internal ones and the external one. If that really is the case then I may be the unluckiest PC owner in the world.

Hi maybe the driver you installed for graphics card is a bad one or installed incorrectly?

I would try the graphics cards manufacuters website and install a new driver.

I would also try downloading the chipset from your computer manufacturers website it holds the USB update drivers. That should help on fixing the external hard drive problems.
Once downloaded the chipset go to device manager and manualy install ALL the drivers for any USB devices listed.

If you reinstalled windows XP then I recommend you also download your BIOS update and any other drivers listed for your make and model of PC/Laptop.

Using device manager to install the drivers etc.

However if the external drive is not pluged in does the PC crash?

Also try it in a diffrent USB port.
