Default [Fixed] Windows Update = AWOL

So I have this ThinkPad R30 sitting in front of me with Windows XP loaded and the most odd thing wrong with it.. It's missing Windows Updates yet somehow has SP2. When I click "Windows Update" through the web, it just loads and loads and loads and never does anything. So I checked the control panel, and opened the Windows Updates options, and all the options are greyed out, so I thought "Ok.. It's off" so I went to the Security Center and clicked 'Turn on Windows Updates" but it said it can't! So I went in services, and there it is "Automatic Updates" except.. It's "Started" Odd. I checked the Windows Update folder in Program Files, and it's empty, no hidden files.

This is rather puzzling me, any ideas? It's a valid/legal installation with a valid key an everything

Yep, I got it, thanks, I just butchered the registry and beat it with a stick until it let me re-enable Updates
