Hi all, newbie here
I recently purchased a DVDRW to replace my CDRW. Anyway it seemed to create a problem with with my device drivers so I took it back out and put the CDRW back in. Ever since then I've has a problem with my USB ports! When I plug my external hard drive into the USB intially I was getting the following error "this device cannot start Code 10". I deleted and then reinstalled the mass storage driver and the little yellow exclamation mark disappeared but now I have another problem. When I plug in the external HD in windows is recognising it, and advising the device is ready for use, but its not creating a drive in my computer or showing up in disk managment. It is however showing in device manager. Disk mgt shows the following: C: partition basic NTFS healthy, CD-ROM 0 no media (D), CD-ROM 1 DVD (F) but nothing else. Any ideas about what the issue is?
Many Thanks

Hi there-- Welcome to PCHF...
I think this will solve the issue... A computer that is running Windows XP cannot detect a USB thumb drive, an Apple iPod, or an external hard disk drive

First remove any usb devices you may have attached. Go under device manager then to your universal serial bus controllers, then uninstall everything under those controllers then go ahead and reboot and try your usb device. Let me know how it goes.

Perhaps reinstalling windows might be best.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried this a couple of times but no joy I'm afraid. As I say its not creating a drive in my computer or showing up in disk managment. It is however showing in device manager. Weird.

The external HDD shows in device manager under USB as mass storage device.
Go to device manager and open list containing USB devices. Right click first on USB host controller and click on update driver. Then do this for each device in the list. Or download the chipset for your make and model of PC/Laptop from manufactures website it contains USB drivers. When you fitted DVD RW you can leave your CD rom in there, just remeber to set one as slave and one as master by moving little plastic jumpers on end of drive.
