That's odd Pirky, so you tried the working stick in each slot and it's only working in it's original? Judging by that motherboard each slot has the same configuration, but there's no way of knowing what damage that dodgy stick of memory could have done, if any. FIC do recommend that you have two sticks of the same memory in either slots 1-2 or 3-4 for that particular motherboard, so you'll most likely find that these new sticks will work quite happily. I guess you'll just have to wait and see.

I checked with Gateway and this system will only handle 3.5 GB of memory Max. So I have 2GB(2X1GB) comming
Probably as much an operating system limitation-- as a harwdware limit.
Not that this info makes a difference for your problem
32-Bit Windows XP will only 'recognize' about 3 Gigs... and 64-bit OS adds issues of it's own. (software compatibilty for one)

Hey pirky, cetainly nothing to lose by sending the faulty one back and getting a new one. If it works, test it and decide what you want to do from there. Send the new ones back, or sell the old ones. Gateway may even send something reliable this time, you never know.

Some will disagree-- but I'd stick with XP-- once you do get things straightened out it'll be plenty fast. Unless you are a "must have the latest game" user, of course. I was commenting on the RAM-- because it's a known issue-- and what can you do with 4 gigs, anyway?
2 is plenty-- 3 is overkill
Vista is not worth the trouble OR the money in my opinion.
I may just skip it completely....
Microsoft is already working on Windows "7".

This is all my personal opinion... and even some of my fellow staffers will disagree, no doubt... it's free country.
