Default XP Issues

Good morning experts. I have a home built AMD PC ahd had started having problems with it shutting down when idle or sometimes the BSD when running multiple applications. Upon rebooting I would get the MS screen telling me it was caused by a device driver. I fooled around a bit to no avail. I used the WIN XP CD to repair but that had caused a bunch of issues most of them respolved (no USB, video card driver, etc.) Two things I would like help on or comments. After the repair I have tried to use the MS updater and it will not install the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. Just says it is not installed. I check the history as it instructs to do but the latest install is 2004. The other issue is the error caused by the device driver. Any hints how to correct? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

You can check wich driver is being downloaded and causing problems buy Windows update/your update history.

Do you have any error codes?

A bad driver can cause Blue Screens of Death.

What OS and SP are you running?

Doe the USB etc show in device manager?

Thanks for the quick reply. OS is XP Pro, SP2. Download history of updates shows no errors but latest update is back in 2004. Nothing newer. Which is weird in itself. Got usb working by locating missing driver for Asus MB I think.

It you are downloading from the web could you try running WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe from %temp%VSSetup50727.42\wcu\msi31? If you are running from CD then go to wcu\msi31 in your CD and run WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe from there.

Or try updating net framework

Try downloading the installer from here Download details: Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable

Thank you Jellybean. That worked, but the next batch of updates didn't (88 or so!). The computer is still shutting down and upon reboot states that it was caused by a device driver error. Can I somehow post the error log or should I do all the prework and post the hijack this logs. Thanks in advance
