Default adobe reader

new to computer. have one year old dell xp home. just downloaded update for adobe this am. since then, can't run my cleaning programs. also noticed that adobe is fat and bloated, taking up a lot of space on computer
question: what is adobe?
what does it do?
do i need it?
i use computer for emails, reading tech pages and playing a lot of pogo hearts.
i recently installed a 1g card for ram.

if someone could please advise me on this issue, i would appreciate it.
thanking you in advance for your help, support and assistance,
jsk4224

Hello and Welcome to PCHF

Adobe Reader is a program for viewing PDF files.
I am not understanding what you mean by fat and bloated. Can you post a screen shot for us?

Fat and Bloated=looks like a very large file takes up a lot of space.
