Default When I scroll a window it lags slowly... help?

Hey guys, I've just reinstalled windows completely and totally formated my hard drive, programs are loading much faster, as they should, it's the first reinstall of windows I've done in at least two years.

So the first thing I download is firefox and I notice that when I scroll down a long page, say the main forums page at this site, it sort of jumps and lags and doesn't scroll down smoothly. Almost as if the framerate can't handle a smooth scroll or as if I had a hundred programs running or something.

It isn't nearly as smooth as before I reinstalled, and yet before I had tons of programs and **** running all the time, now I'm lean mean and yet...

Any ideas? It's a bit annoying.

[EDIT: I have a second question actually while I'm here. I don't know why my computer is determined to annoy me. But what I've just realised is that there is NO SOUND either. It's not like I ever had to install any speakers before I just plugged them into the back, but now there is no sound. When I go to accessories > entertainment > volume control I get the message "there are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel click printers and other hardware and then click add hardware" I kind of tried to follow these instructions but I am totally lost because I don't know what it means or why I have to do this, surely you don't normally have to do these things when you install windows xp I never had to a few years back.]

you need to reinstall your drives for your sound card and maybe some other devices.go to device manager and update from there.click start, right click on my computer, scroll to properties then hard ware then device manager, you may see listed other devices in there is proberly your sound card, right click on it and update over internet this time and every time.Make sure sound is not muted in options and advance on your sound settings.I know you never muted it but it mutes its self for no known reason.
ok try uninstalling firefox and see if that resolves the problem, also best to run a few scans as in viruse/adware/spyware.make sure your firewall etc are turned on.if uninstalling firefox resolves the problem then try a reinstall.

Hi affirmed, what you'll most likely find is that you will need to simply update your graphics card driver, this used to be a common problem for me after a fresh install and installing the latest drivers for my video card always did the trick. (if you need help finding any drivers, just let us know)

Regarding the sound problem, it may be a driver issue to. If installing the driver for your soundcard doesn't work, try this:

Go to Start > Run type services.msc
Scroll down to 'Windows Audio', right click > properties
'Startup type' should be set to automatic, and start should be selected under 'Service status'

Hope that resolves your problems

Hey guys, thanks for the help so far.

I went to hardware > device manager and updated what I could including my display adapters but I don't see anything for soundcard except under 'audio devices' things like codecs etc, none of which say they need any new drivers when I check for them.

Just in case I didn't make clear in my first post, when I go to accessories > entermaint > vol control I just get a message saying "there are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices go to control panel click printers and other hardware and then click add hardware" and then it closes the program. NOTHING. When I do control panel > printers and other hardware > sounds speech and audio > sounds and audio devices It says in the box that there is no audio device

To the friend who recommended run > services.msc, the settings you suggested were already in place...

I am super confused. Any other suggestions?

Hey guys! Thanks for your help but I managed to fix the problem!

It was solved by going to dell.com (as it was a dell system) then going to customer support and the drivers link, then finding my specific system (dimension 5100) and downloading the audio drivers. That fixed the problem.

I'm happy now, and also the screen lag problem has gone away which was solved with your recommendations of updating from the device manager window, so thanks again for your help with that!

Take care guys
