Hi all.

We had a sudden power outage last night, and now I cannot boot into XP, even in Safe Mode.

The PC itself boots just fine, but when I get the log on splash screen that says "Windows XP" it just sits there as if it is about to load Windows, but it never does. I let it sit overnight like that. None of the configurations work--boot into safe mode, last good config, etc

I use Acronis and can boot into the Acronis disk to restore files. Maybe I can restore the autoexec.bat or other boot files? Just a guess.

If anyone can help, I would be most grateful.

Hi Skooz,

Windows can often freeze at that point if there is something that inaccessible, often a drive or file. First of all, try to boot without any removable storage devices, external Hard Drives, USB Pens, CD's in the drive to be sure it's not one of these devices. If that fails, check your drive for errors by using the Windows Setup CD. Start your PC with the setup CD, and when offered enter the recovery console -R-. At the prompt of the recovery console, type chkdsk /f and leave it run. It's likely that a drive was being accessed at the point the power cut occured.

Thanks, madmonkey. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight (thank goodness for work computers).
