Default USB Port problems

Can anyone help me with a problem I'm having with my Mesh computer, I'm trying to connect it to my broadband connection hub via a USB wireless adapter, if the the adapter is plugged into any USB port after a short while the computer will freeze/lock up, if the adapter is removed from the USB port the computer will start working again.

I can connect to the broadband hub via an cable without any problems, I've tried another adapter & it does the same thing, I've tried updating the driver for USB adapter, unticking the box that keeps the XP from switching the USB port off to save power but without any luck, I've also contacted the broadband equipment supplier who has said that the adapter & software are all okay & that the problem is with the computers set up or USB hub.

I'm really struggling to sort this out & don't know what else to check to sort this out, can anyone help me?
