Default Slipstreaming SP2 with XP

I've been trying to do this for about an hour. I've downloaded the SP2 files into a folder named XP-SP2 and have copied my XP files into another as instructed which I named XP-BKUP.

However, when I get into the Command Prompt screen, I run into trouble. I had at first saved the two folders on C drive. But the command prompt screen comes up with the path to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>

It's been so long since I used command prompts, I don't remember how to get to C: all by itself. So, I moved my folders to the Administrator folder--type the path as shown in the illustration, and I keep getting the error that XP-SP2 isn't recognized as a valid internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Wondering if that > after Administrator is the problem. If so, how do I get to C: ?

I've looked up some tutorials on DOS, but frankly, they didn't help. The prompt stays the way it is, no matter what I tried. Must be something I'm doing wrong. I'd appreciate any advice anyone has to offer!

Yes, I did. And I get the error saying the filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Maddening!

Sometimes it dont like hyphens. If you've used the hyphen in the name as a spacer then call it what you've called it. I had a friend doing c:\this-is-my-list using the hyphens as a spacer but was actually typing c:\this is my list and going bananas.

Start | Run | cmd

c:\documents and settings\administrator

is on your screen?

At that type cd\ make sure it's a \ not /

should be at c: then

to access directory cd xp-bkup no slash backslash just a space

to go back to root cd\ next directory type cd xp-sp2

etc etc

That's good to know.

Thing is, I typed it all as I named it, and actually renamed the XP-SP2 folder to xpsp2, but it didn't matter. I still got the error saying it wasn't a valid directory or anything else.

Here's where I'm getting my info on how to do this:

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD - HelpWithWindows.com

This image below shows how the path should look. In my case, it's C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>\xpsp2>WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU /integrate:C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>\XP-BKUP

Wondering if that > after Administrator could be the problem. If so, I can't get rid of it since I can't erase anthing before the cursor. And if I do get to change it to C:, will that > show up to haunt me? If that > doesn't actually have an effect on it, then I don't know what else to do.

When I last re-installed, my system kept crashing and rebooting as the updates were going on. About the 15th or 16th one, each time. Finally, it went through, I got SP2, and for a while it was fine. Then, lately, it started randomly crashing two or three times a day. Does it, also, whenever I tried uninstalling certain programs I didn't need anymore, or trials that had expired. I decided to wipe again to get rid of those unwanted programs, but make this disk first.

Naturally, I'm having tons of trouble! Someone wants me away from this machine, methinks!

Okay, I got a little impatient and started up the updates again. PC crashed when the DirectX9 update started . . . after that my mouse and keyboard wouldn't work at all . . .

Did another new install . . . And I had to go into safe mode to load my drivers for everything because the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work in normal mode. Happily, this time, it all seems good. But, I'm afraid to go get updates. I was so hoping this slipstream stuff would solve my problem! Not activating my copy until I'm sure it'll take the updates.

Going to download the SP2 again . . . Try, try, try, try, try, try again!

Latest Update:

As, I mentioned before, I ended up having to reinstall Windows again. Lost the SP2 download and file for my OS.

This time, everything works as it should--including the command prompt screen. So, the only thing I can figure, is Windows didn't install correctly the first time, and messed a bunch of things up. I had no sound, the mouse and keyboard acted buggy due to the USB ports working only half the time, plus the command prompt screen not accepting changes. All that has cleared up now.

I'm going to try doing a slipstream disk again. Hopefully, now, I won't be told that my folders aren't valid anythings . . .!

Let you know how it goes.
