Default [Answered] Sp2 Problem

I had to replace the motherboard and processor due to MB failure. I had added a 250 GB HD about six months ago and didn't want to replace it to so I used the repair method to restore Windows XP home. After loading all the drivers that were needed everything works fine except I keep getting a warning stating that windows is no longer secure and that I need to download SP2. However, when I go top the site to download Sp2 it says I already have SP2 and won't let me download. The Tech at the store where I bought the MB says I have to reinstall Windows to fix the problem. If I do this I will lose all programs that are installed and also all data. I have backed up the data but I really don't want to have to load all those programs even though I do have discs for everything. Is there a way to repair windows without rerinstalling it?

Hello Hickory, welcome to PCHF.

I'm suprised Windows is working at all, the motherboard must be similar in make and model. The Tech guy at the store was not lying when he said that you need to re-install Windows after swapping out your motherboard. This is something *everybody* has to do when replacing a motherboard unless the two motherboards are identical. The majority of drivers that Windows uses are motherboard drivers that are installed during Windows Setup. Even though you may have noticed Windows installing new hardware after booting up your PC, there are most likely drivers your still using that are meant to be used on your old motherboard. Using these drivers will cause unpredicatable behaviour, and you won't be using your motherboard to it's full performance and potential.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
