Default [Answered] Trouble Re-Installing Windows XP... [Newbie - First Post]

Hey guys,

I've been referred to your site by a couple of people and I hope that you can help me. I have a Windows XP laptop that has just decided to quit working. The CD/DVD drive is not responding to the boot/recovery CD that is in the drive. I've even disable all other boot options and booted it via only the CD and no dice.

The error message that I'm getting is:

"winlogon.exe - unable to locate component (THis application has failed to start because shlwapi.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.)"

I get the same error message, but with the "services.exe" and "lsass.exe" files. They all say that "shlwapi.dll was not found. I have not idea what to do from here. I've called the OEM (Dell) and they tried to use the Ctrl + F11 method of using the recovery partition of the disk and no dice. It wouldn't start.

So ... any suggestion?

I thank you in advance,

Derek

Hello invurzion, welcome to PCHF.

Here's what you need to do to resolve that error.

- Press [CTRL] + [ALT] + [DEL] to bring up the Task Manager.
- Click on Application tab, followed by New Task.
- Under open, type in cmd and press [OK].
- In the command window, type in cd\windows\system32\dllcache
- Then, copy shlwapi.dll ..
- Finally type in exit and then reboot your PC.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
