Default Folder, text files etc.

I am using XP Pro, when I right click on the desktop and choose "new" from the dropdown box it takes about 30 seconds before the next box opens, and I can choose from, folder, text document, shortcut, and about ten other items, I have only noticed this problem in the last few months, is there a fix, I have all the regular updates to XP.

Thanks
Jim

So are you basically saying your computer is slow when working on the desktop?

Do you have a lot of icons on the desktop? Are there any full programmes on there, or just shortcuts?

It may sound obvious, but run an anti-virus check, just to make sure there's no bug slowing your desktop down.

Hope that helps.

I usually install my programs on E drive but have many folders(8) with shortcuts to these programs on the desktop, I also have about 60 shortcuts on the desktop, I have about 15 MP3 files for guitar practice on the desktop and about 15 Webpage shortcuts

I removed all MP3, and programs from the desktop to a folder on E drive, still slow to try and make a text doc or folder from the desktop.

Anyone know why?

Thanks
Jim

I really thought this was easy for all the experienced people that visit this forum, I am stumped, I have nothing but shortcuts on my desktop now and I even defraged the PC, still the time to create a new folder on the desktop takes about 30 seconds or to open a blank text document.

Hope someone knows the answer,

Thanks anyway.

God bless

Jim

Seems hard to find someone who know the solution to this problem, does anyone know of another forum where there are more knowledgable persons.

Thanks anyway

Hi Fromjim,

My apologies for the slow reply.

This kind of thing can result from quite a few things...my first question is generally "how long have you had this particular install of Windows". I've noticed that over time...especially with software and hardware changes, things just start to degrade.

However there's a chance we can reverse this a little or a lot, hopefully.

Ok, Chaski, is right, we should start with a virus scan, I personally recommend AVG Free.

Next run Ad-Aware SE, make sure it's signatures are updated and run a full system scan.

Next, if you feel like a little redundance, you could also run Spybot S&D, just to be safe.

Ok, at this point, I recommend grabbing either Cleanup or CCleaner and running those to clean up temp folders and temporary internet files and what not. Then grab RegCleaner, when it's opened, first head over to the Options>Registry Cleaner>OLE Cleaner menu and select Extra Powerful. Then open up the Options>Registry Cleaner>Ignore List... menu when little window pops up, highlight everything and hit delete, then ok. Now we'll go to the Tools>Registry Cleanup menu and select "do them all" and let it do it's thing till it's done. When it's done...select one of the invalid entries in the main pane then press CTRL+A to select all the entries, click on "remove selected" and then exit when it's done.

Next, click on start>run and type in "chkdsk /r" (without quotes, note the space between the k and the /). This will tell you that files are locked and will ask you to schedule a disk check for next reboot. Click yes. Reboot your machine....go for a coffee cause this could take a while...or if you have the patience, watch and see what happens you might get to see it fix some errors.

Now if you have your original Windows XP disk, put it in the drive (after you're booted into windows) and click start>run and type in "sfc /scannow". Let it do it's thing....hope you really like coffee at this point since if you don't constantly get prompted for a disk you might want to go get another one at this point.

If there is no improvement after all this, we'll look into a couple other things and then we'll have our security team bring you through our hijack this procedure.

AVG FREE, Ad-Aware 2007 Free, Spybot S&D, CCleaner, Regcleaner
