Default [Answered] Installed new HD but can't see it in MyComputer

Hello,
Just now i have the following connected...

1x 160 gb
1x 500 gb (the new hd)
1x CD drive
1x DVD drive

I physically installed it changing the jumper to Slave and detecting it in BIOS, then windows booted up and found new hardware and appeared to install it correctly but it doesn't appear as a drive in My Computer. These are the drives that it is finding:

Local Disk (C)
DVD-RAM Drive (D)
CD-RW Drive (E)
DVD Drive (F)

It appears to me that F: is a virtual drive or something because i right clicked and pressed eject and D: and E: both opened the drives.

Ideally i would like to have my new drive as D:, then the two disc drives as E: and F:
Any help would be marvelous.

Thanks,
Alistair

Hello achisholm, welcome to PCHF.

If it's a brand new disk, it probably doesn't even have a partition, and so, you won't see it yet in My Computer.

- Go back to My Computer, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management.
- Under to category of Storage > Disk Management, and you'll see your drives from here.

Right click on these drives will bring up a menu your can use to create your new partition, and to change the drives letters of each of them just as you wanted.

Hi, thanks for that. It worked.

Now I have mounted my new hd but the drives are now set up as...

C: - hd
D: - DVD drive
E: - DVD drive
F: - a DVD drive that doesn't exist
G: - my new hd

Can you tell me how i can set the new hd to D: and remove this non-existant drive?

Thanks again,
Alistair

Still using Disk Management Alistair.

Simply right click on the drive you want to change. This first being you D drive so that D will then become available for your new HDD. Right click on your D: drive, and click on Change Drive Letter or Paths, followed by Change.

You'll only see Drive Letters that are available, so you'll have to give D: a temporary drive letter (most likely H) to start with. You may then need to reboot for D: to become available again. You can then do the same for your new HDD.

As for your CD-ROM, some CD-Writer/DVD Combo's require two drivers to allow the abilities of both to work properly. I've only recently realised this myself. It's probably not a good idea to remove the other one if you have a combo drive, but you can check Device Manager to make sure there are no devices there which shouldn't be. Go back to Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, followed by Device Manager. If there are any there with exclaimation or question marks against them, let me know.

EDIT: Marked as Answred.
