Default [Information] Windows XP/2000 L2 cache issue

I don't know if anyone here has discovered this yet or not, but an administrator from another community I participate on posted this up, and being the windbag I am... wanted to share it here, just in case. (Yes I'm still working on the hijack this logs etc. for my processor issue, a friend of mine is currently help me check to see if it is a hardware issue first, by running it through prime95, using a borrowed X2 3800 right now)

I checked mine, to verify, and low and behold it was set at ******* 0. I have 512K on each cpu , for a total of 1024K (1MEG) of L2 Cache....I upped my L2 cache to what it is, instant 15FPS boost in-game, and holy ******* speedy applications now.

*IF YOU ARE NOT OK WITH A BROKEN SYSTEM TO NOT EVEN ******* ATTEMPT THIS*
* * * * * * * *THIS MODIFICATION PLAYS WITH YOUR SYSTEM REGISTRY* * * * * * *

Download CPU-Z http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-142.zip
Install CPU-Z , Run CPU-Z
Find your TOTAL L2 Cache 512 x 2 1M x 4 ...Whatever it is, and take note of it.

Create a System Restore point!

Open up Registry Editor : Start >> Run >> [TYPE] "regedit" [ENTER]

Navigate to:

Hkey_Local_Machine >> System >> CurrentControlSet >> Control >> Session Manager >> Memory Management

In the right pain (DWORD VALUES) Scroll find this entry, and right click it, then goto Modify.

SecondLevelDataCache

From here you *MUST* change it from hexidecimal to decimal value. **OR YOUR SYSTEM WILL NOT BOOT**

Now in the input area, type in the amount of L2 Cache you have of which you found from cpuz.

Here are some default values:

P4 Prescott - 1024
AthlonXP Barton - 512
Athlon64 NewCastle - 512
Athlon64 ClawHammer - 1024
AthlonFX - 1024
Sempron - 256

Close registry editor, then reboot.

If you cannot reboot, press F8 on startup, and use last known good configuration. You may have used an incorrect value for your L2.

Again DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!.

*bumps, with numerous apologies* Just want to make sure people know about this, I did the above and it has sped up my computer in a major way. Applications open and run faster and I have gotten some improved gaming performance from this.

Also, microsoft will tell you to leave it at 0, but the best way that it can be explained is "If set to 0 the system *attempts*' to locate the L2 cache size"

Not too positive though, is it?

Ive just done this, and i have to agree it does make a PC and applications faster. For instance iTunes is notorious for slow startups when first launched. Now it only takes about 3 seconds to launch on my PC. Nice find.
