Question [Answered] Trouble installing computer updates

I've completed my reformat of my computer. This time I didn't partition it. Feels strange after two years of partitions!

Anyway, today, each time I click the icon to update my computer--trying to get to SP2--my computer restarts right after I click install. I'm afraid to click it now--it's restarted a half dozen times already.

I have some programs that won't run on SP1. Do I have to get all these other updates first before I can get SP1? Or can I just go to Microsoft site and bypass all this other stuff, seems mainly for IE6, or do I have to be patient and do first things first as they come up?

Appreciate this!

Okay, this time I watched the install instead of trying to continue working . . .

The updates get almost done and in the middle of it, my PC just restarts without warning. I get a nag screen telling me I'm running some MS programs that may have securtiy issues and I'd better fix that . . . Uh-huh . . . and how do I do that when my PC just shuts down in the middle of those patches????

Auugggghhhhh!!!!!!! This is the most aggrevating part of a new install!!!

Giving up until I hear back!!

It is always best to incorporate SP2 into the install to avoid these types of issues. Unfortunately some users do not have SP2 incorporated into the cd but you can always work around this by
Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

So lets see if we can get SP2 installed properly.
Turn off Automatic Updates if this is an option, we will enable these at a later time.

Where are you trying to install SP2 from?
Try this site
Windows XP Service Pack 2

Hi Geekgirl,

Thanks for responding!

I'm trying to get it from the Microsoft update page. Not having much luck though. It just keeps asking me to choose how I want my updates to come: Express or Custom. Then it starts the same updates that have been trying to install all day now.

Never had this trouble before. All updates installed without a problem.

Here's an edited update: All the updates installed without a hitch when I did it from the website this time. I don't know why they wouldn't from the taskbar on my PC. SP2 is installing now . . . we'll see how it goes.

I wasn't able to pick where to install it. It just began downloading and installing by itself. I wouldn't mind doing the method you suggested, but how do I get to choose where the file goes?

It sounds as if Automatic Updates picked it up and started installing, no way to chose a location when this type of install is performed. You can chose when to install but not where.
Thats why I always have this disabled until I am finished with my complete install

Live and Learn!

This is my first time installing without my kids here to help adivise. So, to manually download SP2, all I have to do is disable AutoUpdate? Not sure where to do that . . . Would I'be able to still create a bootable disk if I wanted to do it now?

I'm sure this won't be the last time I reformat! I'll remember these things for next time!

Everything seems fine--for now!

Well like I stated in thread #3, its best to install with SP2 incorporated onto the install cd. I gave a link for instrucitons.
And I feel that keeping automatic updates turned off while setting up the machine is the best route to take, IMO
