Default [Resolved] System Restore Question

I would just like to say I think this site is great.

I have a question. My computer started running slower than usual, so I removed some programs that weren't working right and a few programs we never use. Well, I accidentally ended up removing some program that I actaully need. I removed my Quicktime player, and now I can't run Itunes. I had a trial version of Office 2007 installed and removed it since my trial had expired. Well, now my Office 2003 isn't working it asks me to insert my program disk to reinstall, which I don't have. So what do I do? I think, don't panic, just do a system restore, right? Wrong. I go in to run the system restore to restore my computer to a previous date. Pick a bold date from the list and click on a restore point, then click the next button. Then, nothing. No error message, no dinging noise, no nothing. The computer does nothing, like I never even clicked a date. I have clicked every bold date, and they all respond like this. Is something wrong with the program? Are my restore points corrupted? Am I missing something? What do I do?

There are a few things you can check--One tip I've seen is to try running restore in "safe mode"
here is a tutorial/troubleshooting page from Kelly's Korner--
System Restore for Windows XP
and another I found-- also from an MVP
Here are some troubleshooting steps to take when System Restore fails to restore:

Kelly Theriot is a Microsoft MVP -- she has an extensive system tweaks page... and has saved me from disaster more than once.
Unfortunately-- if those points are corrupted or deleted... there's not much you can do .
I suggest reading through this page, and try to determine if any of the small helps will fix your situation.

I'll look it over and let you know if anything works. If not I guess I'm just screwed. Worst case scenerio I'll just have to reinstall some programs. I just really don't wanna have to reinstall itunes 'cause I have over 900 songs. I created a backup disk a while back, but I'd probably still lose about 200. I wonder if I can install the Quicktime Player without having to completely redo itunes?

I would certainly think so-- Quicktime is their free player-- ti would not be good if all of eveyones music got corrupted every time they upgraded the player !

In any case there are other methods for file recovery-- if it does not work out post back

I don't know what's wrong with my restore points, but they don't work. I don't even get an error message. That really bugs me. I downloaded Quicktime, and now Itunes works like a charm. Any idea how I can get Microsoft Office back? Is there any way to restore just that program suite?

Thanks for all your help.

Without an install disc-- it'll be tough.
Where did you get your PC ?
Is it a home-built-- or off-the-shelf ?
If it's a bought model-- and you have lost the original discs --the maker should be able to replace it-- you might have to pay a small fee.
System Restore won't fix individual programs-- even Microsoft apps-- they are separate. Restore is intended to save you from a reinstall-- but it is severely limited-- on purpose.
If you have a licensed version of office-- you could try running "office update"
(there is a separate site)
