Default winxp x64 Issue - external hard disk causes automatic reboot!

hi everyone,

I've had a continual problem with Windows XP x64 Professional Edition and using external hard disks.

Whenever I connect my external hard disk (usb) to my PC, and attempt to move (or copy) files to or from, the system automatically just restarts. It happens in safe mode too.

I have scoured the Internet looking for a solution to this problem, but I have never been able to find one. Several friends I have who also use xp x64 have the same issue.

Note also, that this does NOT happen on usb flash drives or other usb equipment (printer, scanner, digital camera).

If anyone can come up with a solution to this matter, it'd be TRULY APPRECIATED. This has been a problem for me for over two years.

Hello Jziegler83,

When the computer boots up, keep hitting F8 until you get the boot options screen. Choose disable automatic reboot on system failure. Once you are in Windows try to replicate the problem with the external drive. Hopefully what you will get this time is a blue screen of death.

If you do get the BSOD, post what it says in this thread.

We will go from there.
