Hey there guys this is my first post so may as well say that my name is John and the computer i will be using on these forums is working, but the one i am trying to fix is not. The computer that is broken is in another room of my house and has some major problems. Every time you hook the internet up to the computer at all it pretty much opens up about 3 pop ups every 30 seconds, and after tons of virus scans due to freezing i've come to the conclusion that the problems are deeper than a simple virus scan. I was wondering what you guys would prescribe for these symptoms:

Occasional freezing of the system
Some non user initiated shut downs
Pop ups out the ying AND yang
General slow running on the system

I'm running Win XP and its about a two or three year old HP system if that means anything to you. Hard drive has over 50 percent free space on it. Theres enough RAM for running any programs that a standard user would need, it does have internet but is a nuisance because of the already stated pop ups.

Sorry for the long post but i'm hoping someone will read through that and give me a little help.
