Default Windows Task Manager + stupid brother = ....

Hi,
the problem is this;

my brother, in all his lonely 12 year old self likes to download games using the program utorrent. The problem with this is, not only does it often slow down our computer and bring many virus', often he is downloading about 4-5GB a week, when we only have 8GB for the whole month. While my parents dont like it, they dont offer much support in stopping him nor do they really know how, so its up to me to keep his program downloading at minimal. To do this i used to use Windows Task Manager and Change/Remove programs to delete utorrent, the games and because he has found ways of hiding Utorrent, the only way to see if it was downloading was to use Windows Task Manager.

Now the little <censored> has gone and somehow disabled windows task manager AND the remove programs part. The most i can find on the message is that, even tho my account is the administrator, the administrator has disabled my access to it.... and I cannot find where to control access. If anyone can tell me how to bring back Task Manager, and any other ways that will stop him from being able to hide utorrent (there used to be an icon in the taskbar bottom right but he has since been able to stop it from appearing) i would be very grateful!!!

please help.

Sarah

Unfortunately we do not support P2P file sharing programs but in this case you are trying to rid of it so I believe we can assist.

It is likely that a Virus has blocked the usage of Task Manager in your system by enabling the DisableTaskMgr policy via the registry. I strongly suggest that you perform a thorough scanning either by using your anti-virus program or using one of the online scanners like Panda Active Scan or Eset.

First off, you need to gain access to the system and change his account to a limited user. Next, try the follwoing methods to enable Task Manager again

Method 1

Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste)
Method 2

Download and run this REG fix and double-click it.
Method 3
  • Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
  • Navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System
  • In the right-pane, delete the value named DisableTaskMgr
  • Close Regedit.exe
Method 4: Using Group Policy Editor - for Windows XP Professional
  • Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK.
  • Navigate to this branch:
User Configuration / Administrative Templates / System / Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options / Remove Task Manager
  • Double-click the Remove Task Manager option.
  • Set the policy to Not Configured.
Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator

ok. when you start up your computer, hit F8 repeatedly and start up the pc in safe mode. when it gets to the login screen, there will be another account, name Administrator. log on to that, (unless he has put a password on it, and then you have a whole nother set of problems that will be dealt with when and if the time comes) and remove all programs he downloaded, including utorrent. then, create a password for that account, and create a limited account for your brother. now, put a password on the "administrator" account. make the 2 passwords different. now, downlaod AVG Anti-virus free, run a full system scan. delete any viruses. now you should be set. if you have any problems, let us know

Please DO NOT install AVG Anti-virus Free if you already have an anti-virus program installed, this will cause system slow downs and conflicts.

ah yes. my bad. if you have anti-virus already, which one do you have? if your comptuer is running slow, and you have McAfee or Norton installed, those could be part of the contributors.

So have you gained access again and can you put a stop to his actions by limiting his account?
