Default Old Desktop doesn't come back after crash

Recently I had a crash of my Windows XP home edition, sp 2 desktop which required me to reactivate Windows. Everything is working again except that what appears as the desktop for my user account is not what it used to be: i.e., the desktop contains different files, folders, and icons.

When I go to my user account:

C:/Documents and Settings/Richard/Desktop

all the old contents of the desktop are there right where they should be, but for some reason the active desktop for this user name is not showing the same contents.

Bizarre, huh..Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Richard

Hi tuneguy,

Sorry for the late reply. What type of files are in there, icons etc ?

Can you right click the desktop and go to Arrange Icons By and then make sure Show Desktop Icons is checked.

Hi, thanks for the reply, but Show Desktop Icons is checked. The problem is that the system is not displaying the right Desktop folder for the user account.

I'm sure this has to do with user profiles-- and file associations with that profile
The easiest way to fix this is to delete that profile & create new.
There is another way-- but it's a little involved-- and some program's operation may be affected.

when you reactivated it, I'm assuming you did a repair install? if so, that will blow out your ntuser.dat file, and you need to copy it over to your new profile, and that needs to be done in safe mode. ntuser.dat is right off of the c drive, but you need to make sure you are able to view the system files to see it.
