Question [Fixed] Searching for "My computer" takes minutes

Hi, I recently reinstalled XP Home (with reformat during the setup) and at first glance the reinstall has been successful except that it takes about 2 minutes to search for My Computer whenever I try to open My Computer through the start menu or drop down menu in an opeb file dialogue box. Once the searching is finished I can access all folders and file contents virtually instantaneously. Any suggestions on what is causing this and how I can fix it.

cheers

Al

Hi there and welcome to PC Help Forum

Do you have any USB drives or memory card readers plugged into your PC?

No, it doesn't make any difference. I have autoplay set to open folder for USB drives. The autoplay folder opens instantly, and the folders open instantly, but if I try to drop down the menu in the address bar the searching starts and takes about 2 minutes to complete.

Ok, no problem, give this trusted tweak a try;
Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP - line 157 (right hand side)

Click on it and select "open"
