Unhappy IE7 crashing due to activex ?

C:\DOCUME~1\steve\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERbec7.dir00\iexp lore.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\steve\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERbec7.dir00\appc ompat.txt

The above code is what I get when IE7 crashes, I've also seen WER7F96,WERc13a,WERe21d. It's happening on both my desktop & laptop, both still running XP.

IE7 never seems to crash when I right click it and 'start without add-on's' so I'm guessing that it's got something to do ActiveX ?

How do I fix it, empty the temp file?

Hi there and welcome to PCHF, empty your temporary internet files and cache, and see if that cures the problem, if not, we'll explore other avenues.

Thanks for your reply, is the best way to do that via 'control panel' & 'disk clean up' ?

Hi there, the best way IMO is to enable Hidden Files and Folders.
  1. Click on Tools in My Computer
  2. Click on Folder Options
  3. Click on the View Tab
  4. Under the Hidden Files & Folders Category click on "Show Hidden Files & Folders"
  5. Click Apply
  6. Click Ok
Then navigate to the following folder
  1. Open My Computer
  2. Double click your Hard Disk (Usually C)
  3. Double click on the "Documents & Settings" Folder
  4. Double click your account folder (i.e. Joe Bloggs)
  5. Double click the "Local Settings" Folder
  6. Double click the "Temp" Folder" and empty its contents. (if you get an error about a file is in use and cannot be deleted don't worry)
  7. Exit back to the desktop
Then Run Disk Cleanup, located in Accessories >>> System Tools.

Click on Tools (in Internet Explorer) go to "Manage Add ons) enable/disable addons. Do this for each one untill the problem stops. This work out which one is causing IE to hang.

I did actually do that before I joined/posted here, I think it's an activeX that microsoft use so you can get windows updates.

Am I right in saying that microsoft only recently started using activeX on their update page?
Up untill a month or so ago my desktop got it's update on the old style page, never had a problem with IE, I guess that it did not use activeX.
My new laptop also get's it's updates from this new style activeX page, funny how IE7 keeps crashing on both machines, strangely though it's never when I'm getting a microsoft windows update.
