Default Windows Startup Password

Hey all, I'm having a problem with windows passwords.

I have never had a password on my windows account (never needed to have one). Today a message popped from Norton Internet Security telling me that it had detected a Trojan. So I restarted my PC planning to run a virus scan after it booted.

However when windows came to boot, a box appeared asking for a password. It wasn't the usual windows XP passwords page with nice pretty pictures, it was the older windows style password box. I didn't enable passwords or anything. When I entered nothing as the password, it logged on then logged out straightaway. I cannot boot in safe mode because it asks for the password (no option to log in as administrator).

Is this a virus or is windows just going crazy?

Cheers

Hi!

With the box for the password, do you mean this:http://www.ews.uiuc.edu/userguide/winman/logon.jpg?
What happens if you try to boot in safe mode, do you get the common logonscreen from windows?

Robin,

It is very similar to that box, although it has more of a windows ME colour scheme. When I try to boot in safe mode it takes me to the exact same password box, and when I enter no password the exact same thing happens - login then quick logout.

Thanks.

Not quite - more like the first one you posted. It had the "options" button down the bottom, but when I clicked that all it did was show the "EN" language thing (like what is on the taskbar).
