Angry slow system startup

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my PC the thing is, on the log on screen on system start up after i've typed in my password, most of the time it will make a grinding noise coming from the floppy disk drive while its loading personal settings, which could take upto half a minuet untill it goes to the desktop screen, some times none of my desktop icons show at all untill after about 30 seconds. I dont know what the problem is at all i've been expeiriencing this now for 3 days I have made no changes to my computer apart from installing the the up to date java I cant see this being the problem. I have ran Norton antivirus and spyware but no risks detected and I have done a registry scan with registry mechanic v7.0 fixed all problems but i still get that grinding noise on startup(loading personal settings) and slow system start. please help!!!
