I use Media Player Classic to play all my video files, I have a lot of real media files on my system and I find using that with the
K-Lite Codec Pack works great. (the two come bundled together if you choose the full version)
VLC cannot play Real video as you've just found out, and I personally wouldn't touch RealPlayer with a bargepole. If you would rather stick with RealPlayer then I think you have to download a subtitle plugin to get it to work, but even then there's no guarantee it will work as I'm not sure of it's compatibility with certain file types.
