Allright, a friend of mine asked me to install av software onto his computer. The computer runs windows XP. I installed avg free to begin, scanned, it discovered 10 threats, I removed them and was prompted to restart, so I restarted. This is where the problems began, the OS would boot until just after the XP loading screen, after that took over half an hour to reach the login screen, then it would completely freeze. I've tried booting in safe mode and last known good configuration but the problem still occurs with these two boot modes. I'm wrecking my head trying to think what has happened. Anyone help me out ?
I wont have access to his computer until tomorrow, so I cant do anything practical at the minute

Do you remember what threats were found? The newest AVG free has a couple of bugs in it. It has been known to get rid of some importnat files.
When you boot back into XP restore the threats.. And let us know what they are.. Also go to msconfig and make sure event log is enabled. This will run havok on the pc..
