Default [Pending] XP refuses to connect to internet

Hope somebody can help me with this one.

I have been given a PC to fix. It refuses to connect to the internet.

Running XP service pack 2.

If I connect it to my router, I can ping the router, and I can see from the status of the network connection that it is live, but Internet Explorer just gives me Page not found every time.

Thinking it might be IE that is damaged in some way, I installed Firefox - same result.

I have also tried with a Zoom USB ADSL modem. IE dials, seems to get a connection going (once again the status of the connection shows traffic coming and going) but no web pages are found.

I have tried it with Windows Firewall on and off.

The only other protection running is AVG anti-virus.

I have been through the "Create a new connection" wizard a few times - no difference. It seems to me that IE and Firefox are both ignoring the conection which is already there.

Any ideas?

Hello Steve, welcome to PCHF.

Can you connect to your router page from Internet Explorer using the address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1?

Your absolutely certain no other security software is running such as ZoneAlarm, Norton or McAfee? If so, please can you check out PCHF Prework on my signature, and post a hijackthis log file back here, and then we can get the security team to rule out malware.

Thanks for this - looks as if it might take some time, but I will be back with the results tomorrow.
