Exclamation Cant change background and files wont open with the right program

I cant change my background like I should normally be able to. I can't right click on a jpg and set it as background and it wont detect any of the wallpapers i have in my pictures folder like it used to. The only wallpapers it will use are the default windows wallpapers or anything i set to wallpaper by right clicking on an image online.

As for my other problem, I can't get files to open with the correct program. I know i can set a file type to always open with a certain prgram, but that isnt working.
Example: I have a .max file which should open in 3ds max. Instead it opens in nothing and stay a blank file with no icon. I can still open it by opening up the program and opening it from there, but it's annoying.
My winamp play lists also all seem to want to open in windows media player no matter how many time i tell them to always open in winamp.

[edit]
I've noticed another problem that I don't normally have. When I log in i get this
Preparing to Install...
Please wait while windows find 'new copy'

ERROR 1706. No valid source could be found for this product NewCopy. The windows installer can not continue.(I press ok)

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'NewCopy' disk and click ok.

it just keeps looping through the same thing over and over until i end task on it. This sounds like its something stupid that i just don't know, but as far i know I'm not trying to run anything that needs a cd. I tried to shut it off in msconfig but it says i need to be admin which it never says. I can normally shut off or turn on whatever i want since im the only name on the computer.

Thanks for any help

Hi Plixik and welcome to PC Help Forum

See if you can restore the original XP system files by clicking on the link below in my signature "System File Checker".

Thanks, but I actually don't have any of the CDs for XP. Is there any way to do it without them?
