Hi folks,
I'm working on a friends computer that is running Windows 2000. This system fails to boot into the Operating System and gives the error, "System File is Missing or Corrupt".
So I then put in the Windows XP CD to run the Recovery Console (I hope it doesn't matter if its the XP CD and not 2000).
Following a tutorial on the internet, I went into the "System32" directory and renamed the "config" folder and made a new config folder. I then went to copy the system file from C:WINNTrepairsystem to C:WINNTsystem32config.
The computer waits a few seconds and responds with "The file could not be copied".
I attempted to run chkdsk /p but all that did was tell me "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems,"
I also deleted BOOT.INI and ran the BOOTCONFIG /rebuild command.
I'm clueless now. Should I perhaps try to copy the system files from a working computer and copy them onto this computer? Will that even work?
If anyone has any advice, please tell me!

Heya Azurepancake,
Find out the manufacturer of the hard drive and go to their website to download a hard drive diagnostic tool. It will be free and you can create a bootable CD with it. Run the diag to see the health of the hard drive. The "unrecoverable problems" error and the "file cannot be copied" error hint to me that the hard drive may be failing. Let's go from there!

Hi .
It shouldn't matter that you are using RC from an XP disc. Try running CHKDSK using this option: > chkdsk c: /f Test the hard drive using the drive manufacturer's own test utility: Seagate/Maxtor/Quantum http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/ Western Digital http://support.wdc.com/download/ Hitachi/IBM http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm Samsung http://www.samsung.com/in/products/harddiskdrives/utilities/hutil.htm
