Post Reboot freeze?

Hi all,

I recently upgraded my RAM (working fine) BUT acouple of days later i had to restart my computer and it froze up on boot screen. It froze just as its about to do Memory Test and if i skip that memory test when i get to the login screen it freezes blue but i can move my mouse but the mouse is all jumpy. I have got past this problom acouple of times but my PC has NEVER done this before i got my new RAM.
I was wondering what it is that is causing this so it doesnt keep happening when i start my PC. I have to keep turning my PC off by holding the button in then starting up again after about 5 of them it does the memory test and works OK but i dont want to keep having to do this.

Hi Kieran,

It sounds like you may have received a faulty stick on memory there. You can use memtest to test for faulty memory (or another option would be to remove the new memory to see if your problems are resolved).

- If you have a floppy drive and a spare floppy disk, please download: http://www.memtest86.com/memt32.zip

- If not, please download, unzip and use nero to burn this image: http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.2.iso.zip

Reboot with the CD/Floppy in the drive and start memtest. What make memory did you buy Kieran?

CT12864Z335 - 1GB, 184-pin DIMM , DDR PC2700 from Crucial.com

EDIT: Do i just copy the files out of the .zip file and put them on my floppy? ( sorry i have never used a floppy before)

Cool. You should be OK for warranty if it you find problems.

If you extract those files to a folder you will remember. The zip file contains 4 files. One of them is called install.bat. Run this when you have the floppy in the drive. Once it is complete, you should be able to reboot and start from the disk. (you may need to go into BIOS to change your boot priority if it's doesn't boot to the disk automatically). If you need me to explain this in further detail, please let me know.

I think it's very likely Kieran, altough without those memtest's we can't be absolutely 100% sure. One thing to note about these chips (if your not already aware) is that they are very sensative. Sensative to damp, heat and static. Make sure that when handling these parts that you don't touch any of the components, and handle by the edges of the module only.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
