Unhappy [Pending] STRANGE: no sound

i was browsing the web with mozila firefox and i had a shockwave program running
and everything was fine then i close that and tried to play it again abotu 2 minutes later(not sure if this was the cause of the problem) but then my sound stoped working. everything plays ie when i play music the position counter moves across and the the graphic equalizer thing moves up and down etc but no sound comes out.
but if i go to jack sensing and go to sense jack, if i have something playing i can here it while it does its jack sensing thing ??? really strange

Hi there and welcome to PCHF, i apologise for the delay. Ok do you know the make and model of your sound card? If not right click My Computer and select Manage. Now click the Hardware Tab and select Device Manager. Now expand the Sound Video & Game Controllers category and you should have an entry such as AC97 Audio

Smile Re: STRANGE: no sound

sorry...

yeap its realtek ac'97

theres no "!" or anything

i attached a dxdiag thing

oh another thing possible unrelated
i think a couple of days before this happened the power plug came out at the wallsocket and i think that made my usb drive and my external hard drive not be able to be recognized, but today i found a forum and fixed it by unpluging it at the wall for a while , which worked but had no effect on the sound problem

thanks

There are always about 5 ways that settings can be messed up--

have you gone to control panel/sounds and audio devices/advanced volume controls. At the top of the window --it should list your Realtek AC 97
--look for any muted volume controls-- if there --uncheck them.

A corrupted installation of Windows Media Player-- or other player can "hose" your settings

your AC 97 driver may be corrupted... it should be a simple download and install-- UNINSTALL the old driver before installing new...
If you had a sudden power-loss a driver could have easily been corrupted.

theres no "!" or anything
the exclamation points under device mgr -- are a guideline-- they do NOT necessarily mean that everything is perfect. Just that the device is detected-- and a driver is installed. Whether that driver works right or not is another question....also whether Windows "sees" the driver.
