Default [Pending] CD drives not recognized

I have a problem with Windows XP not recognizing a CD/RW and a DVD drive. Both drives are hooked up properly but cannot be found in device manager, nor will the run, they both have power but do not appear anywhere in the system. If anyone has any ideas on where I went wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi juvbboll, welcome to the PCHF.

Can you please check to make sure both drives are set to CS (Cable Select).
If they are, try unplugging one, and just plug one it...if it doesn't, try the other. If that fails, try replacing the IDE cable that plugs them into the motherboard.

Thanks, though it didn't solve the problem, it might have futher identified it.
Both drives (cd & dvd) work. The IDE cable is good. What happened: when only one drive is plugged in, it works fine. When both are plugged in (tried both on CS and on top as M bottom as S) the system does not see them at all. Tried an IDE cable from other pc as well.
I have never confronted an issue like this and am totaly clueless as to how to correct it.
