The essential ones? Well obviously windows updates, directx (Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime ).

Anti Virus
AVG Free Advisor - Free antivirus and anti-spyware downloads

Firewall
I personally like Comodo™ Free Firewall Software Download

Anti-Spyware
The home of Spybot-S&D!

Browser
Nothing beats Mozilla Firefox in English | Mozilla Europe

File cleaner (etc)
CCleaner - Home

And don't forgot your hardware drivers

All the above files are free and completely clean of any nasties such as spyware!

Matt
