Default [Pending] Modem causing my PC problems?

I have just registered with this forum so hello to everyone!

I recently had windows xp reinstalled as my PC was running really slow. Just before the reinstall, I was having quite a few problems that are still there. Here are the main ones:
  • The PC will not shut down and hangs on a box saying 'saving your settings'
  • When trying to switch users, a box often appears saying 'this computer is in use and has been locked'
  • I sometimes get a box saying 'application error - the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000017). Click on OK to terminate the application.' - then everything disappears except the background picture.
  • I connect to the internet then about 20 minutes later, it disconnects although it says that it is still connected and I cannot reconnect without restarting the PC (usually by having to manually turn it off)
These problems all started when I upgraded my broadband connection from 512k to 8mbps. I still have the same modem which is a Fujitsu FDX310. I think the drivers are about 5 years old and there are no recent drivers to update to.

Could my problems be caused by the modem now having to work with a much faster connection and not being suitable? It seems to much of a coincidence that all of these problems occured at the same time as the broadband changeover (same company) and are still present after reinstalling windows.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your quick response.

I have followed all the instructions. everything seemed to go well except the AVG scan showed 21 tracker cookies but did not have any reports. Superantispyware showed 4 tracker cookies and also did not have a report. I double checked all of the settings were as instructed and they seemed to be OK. I ran CCleaner three times and the third time, there was nothing left to clean.

The only report that I was able to save was the HijackThis report which I have attached.

Any reason why AVG scan and Superantispyware didn't have any reports listed?

Hi there, the reason for this maybe because they didnt pick anything serious up, only minor things like tracking cookies.
